Ivy Pulling
Ivy Pulling
English ivy is a non-native plant that has invaded the park. It grows along the forest floor and up trees in the park.
The Ivy League group tackles this invasive plant at their monthly work parties. New volunteers are always welcome!
The “Ivy League” hold their work parties on a monthly basis. Their work parties are 2 hours long and are held either Saturday or Sunday afternoons.
For students earning volunteer hours, we will provide a certificate as a record of your volunteer contribution.
For individuals or groups who would like to assist with the removal of holly, please email the Coordinator of Volunteers - volunteer@pacificspiritparksociety.org or phone - 604-228-0812.
If left unchecked, English ivy climbs and kills trees. In high wind conditions, trees laden with English ivy are more likely to fall or be damaged due to the additional weight of the ivy.
Volunteers help to remove and control the spread of ivy by using strength and determination when engaging in a
tug-o’-war with the long and rambling ivy vines.
Volunteers later gather the piles of removed holly and pile it on Metro Vancouver Park trucks for removal to Green Waste.
Additional Information:
English ivy grows vigorously and causes permanent displacement of native plant populations.
Wildlife associated with native plants is also forced to relocate.
English ivy alters natural succession patterns. Over time, the ivy can kill an entire forest, leaving a dense blanket of ivy broken only sparsely by shrubs or trees.
